Michigan celebrated India’s 73rd Independence Day on August 17, 2019 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. The event was organized by India League of America (ILA) in collaboration with other Indian community organizations in Michigan.
“It is so nice to see Indians of all backgrounds and ages come to enjoy this annual event,” said Sangeeta Shukla of Canton.
Over 20,000 attended the event, which began with a parade. The event’s cultural chair, Rashmi Upadhyaya, coordinated multiple dances and performances as well as two fashion shows to entertain the crowd.
“It’s a time-honored family tradition to attend India Day,” said Northville’s Mona Karwande, whose twin children danced in the show. “Now, after having children, it is even sweeter to pass on the tradition to our kids and have them participate in cultural shows keeping the tradition going for the next generation.”
Vendors also showcased their ethnic crafts including art, furniture, jewelry and clothing. Actor Vivek Oberoi delivered remarks.
This is the 18th India Day celebration organized by ILA.
