Detroit once again hosted the Dhamaal Dance Competition at the Detroit Performing Arts Center stage on Saturday, February 8.
Dhamaal is an intercollegiate fusion dance competition which incorporates Indian classical dance, hip-hop, folk and jazz/ lyrical in each performance. Each team was creative and unique, with dances full of high energy.
Eight college Bollywood fusion dance teams from across the country competed for the title. The lineup included Drexel JHALAK, Duke RHYDHUN, UT SAAYA, Michigan TAAL, BROAD STREET BAADSHAHZ (Philadelphia), USC ZEHER, Spartan ZAARIYA (Michigan State) and Gator ADAA (University of Florida).
The first-place winner of Dhamaal 2020 was Philadelphia-based BROAD STREET BAADSHAHZ, Drexel’s JHALAK took second place and Spartan ZAARIYA placed third.
“I am so proud of all of the kids as they work so hard even though they are busy at college,” said attendee Vikram Sethi of Dearborn, there cheering for TAAL, which represents his alma mater.
Proceeds from the evening will support the Detroit Educational Society (DES) and the Detroit Indian Women’s Association (DIWA).
