Ragamala: An Evening of Indian Classical Dance and Music

Akshara is delighted to offer a free evening of Indian performing arts, Ragamala, to the community!

An evening of Indian classical dance (Odissi) and classical music by some of the most accomplished artists of Michigan.

Well-known dancer and choreographer Sreyashi Dey will present excerpts from the lyrical poetic work, the Gita Govinda by the 12th century poet Jayadeva. Love songs of Krishna and Radha will be interpreted through expressional dance in the Odissi style by Sreyashi, accompanied by soulful music, while U-M professor of Art History, Dr. Paroma Chatterjee, will recite the poetry in English.

A multi-faceted Indian classical music concert will feature renowned vocal artist Anjana Kusari from India, accompanied by Hemant Babtiwale on Tabla and Anirudha Phatak on Harmonium. The instrumental section of the concert will feature Venkatesh Venkataraman on Mridangam, Akhilesh Bhaskar on Cajon & Khanjira, Prashanth R P on Veena, and Krishna Prasad on Flute .
