This week, we’re highlighting graduating Indian-American high school seniors in metro-Detroit.
Aachel Patel, International Academy East
Extracurriculars & honors:
HOSA (First place at international leadership conference); IASA, choreographer; Nartan Dance Academy (15 years); Relay for Life; Ski and Snowboard Club; Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Sunrise Senior Living, volunteer; Detroit Education Society, tutor
Favorite high school memory: Learning and performing senior fusion with my graduating class at her final IASA show.
Future plans: Attending Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, majoring in Finance and Economic Consulting.
Shane Sanghvi, West Bloomfield High School
Extracurriculars & honors:
EARTH Club executive board and president; Varsity sailing, team co-founder; Spanish Club, executive board (junior year); Health Science Club (HOSA), states qualifier; National Honors Society; WBHS Medical Mentorship Program participant; led team of students which successfully built a computer that seamlessly runs Linux, Windows, and MacOS.
Favorite high school memory: Being able to assist in the installation of the brand new solar array at his high school.
Future plans: Will attend the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in the coming fall, with an intended major in Neuroscience and a minor in Political Science; Is currently a poolee in the United States Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program (DEP).

Riya Doshi, Bloomfield Hills High School

The Hawkeye newspaper, editor-in-chief; Black Hawks forensics team, captain; Engage18 nonprofit, co-founder; BHHS Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) chapter founder and president; MSVMA State Honors Choir; counselor at Bloomfield SCAMP
Favorite high school memory: The national student walkout held on the one-month anniversary of the Parkland shooting. Although the origins of the movement were heartbreaking, it was awe-inspiring to see so many students across the nation come together for a common cause.
Future plans: Attending Vanderbilt University to study Philosophy and Medicine, Health, and Society. After college, she hopes to attend medical school and eventually become a physician and health policy writer.

Makena Torrey, Bloomfield Hills High School
Extracurriculars & honors: Student Leadership; BHHS women’s soccer; forensics team; Indian Student Alliance; Spanish Club; Math Club; Model UN; DECA; HOSA; BHHS cross country; Piano; National Honor Society; work at LifeTime Fitness Kids Academy
Favorite high school memory: Traveling to Killarney Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada, where she camped, hiked and canoed for eight days.
Future plans: Attending the University of Michigan’s Honors College.
Nitin Kinra, Novi High School
Extracurriculars & honors: Varsity swim team; Varsity tennis team; HOSA (Health Occupational Students of America); National Honor Society; Student Youth Dialogues; Give Kids a Smile dental non-profit
Favorite high school memory: Being able to walk with both parents down the pool deck on senior night with their arms locked together. It was a true testament to the team effort it took to stay dedicated to a sport for the past 11 years
Future plans: Attending the University of Michigan, where he hopes to grow in the field of health science as he aspires to be an oral surgeon one day.
Message to family: “It takes effort when nobody is looking to make it seem effortless when people are looking.” Mom and Dad, it was the effort you put into me starting at 4:15 a.m. that allowed me to become the man I am today.
Shree Mysore, Novi High School

Favorite high school memory: Annual IASA shows in the spring. The feeling of being on stage surrounded by friends and performing the dances practiced for months just feels so contagiously fun.
Future plans: Attending Michigan State University, pursuing a pre-medical track majoring in Neuroscience within the Lyman Briggs Honors College
Message to family: “I just want to thank my family, especially my mom, for being the support system I needed throughout high school. Without them I would definitely not be where I am today. They’ve shaped me into the person I’ve become and there isn’t enough words to express my love for them.”
